What the group program is

Personal & interactive

Being open and sharing your own experiences with sleep with the group is encouraged. You’ll also complete specific ACT based exercises together.

Focused on ACT

Build mindfulness, acceptance and self-compassion based skills to help you. Forget about any supplements, gadgets or strict rule following.

Educational

Explore the common reasons why bad sleep may keep on happening and learn about some basic principles about sleep to improve it.

Experiential

Learn a variety of different ACT tools in each session, involving active participation in the group. Not every technique will help everyone, so discover what helps you.

What actually happens in each session?

The group program has an educational focus. While you may indirectly receive emotional support throughout the program, the primary goal is to teach you how to use ACT to improve your sleep. Each session begins with an introduction from Ed, followed by an opportunity for participants to share their recent experiences with sleep. Ed will then guide the group through various ACT-based learning activities.

FAQs

  • The course is intended to help people suffering from either short term or difficulty sleeping. It does this using the clinically proven Acceptance & Commitment Therapy based approach.

The course cannot, however, help individuals to deal with some specific sleep problems that require medical attention. These include sleep apnoea, parasomnias (e.g. sleep paralysis, sleep terrors & sleep walking), restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and REM sleep behaviour disorder.

The course is intended for adults over the age of 21 who are medically and psychiatrically stable and healthy. Therefore the course is not suitable for those experiencing any of the following health conditions: schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar disorder, feelings and thoughts of suicidality and any neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. dementia).

  • No, not if you don’t want to. However, participation is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Please bear in mind that the discussions are based on the topic of sleep and insomnia and other private personal matters are not discussed. You will never be put on the spot to contribute and participating in group discussions is always optional.

  • Most people feel anxious about attending a group session and you will not be alone, it’s a totally normal feeling to have. However, everyone there wants you to feel comfortable and supported and is there for the same reason as you are; to help improve their sleep too.

  • This is a common question but it rarely happens. If you’re ever uncomfortable in a group you can always ask to attend the next one. However there may be positives in seeing someone you know in your group. It may be that you both hadn’t been open about your difficulties before but could now be a support for each other.

  • Yes. The group course is designed so that each session follows on from each other and closely replicates what you would cover in one-to-one sessions. Just like a course of antibiotics, the group is most effective when attended regularly. You wouldn’t expect an antibiotic to work if you only took the first and last tablet and this group course for improving sleep is no different.

  • It’s okay and understandable if something unexpected happens and you can’t attend a session. However, please let me (Ed) know as soon as you know you are unable to attend by emailing me at londonsleepcoach@gmail.com . Firstly this means we won’t be waiting for you to attend the zoom to get started. Secondly it may be possible to arrange for you to attend a separate group session on another date so that you don’t miss anything.

  • All of the group sessions are delivered live on zoom by myself (Ed) and none of them are recorded. This is with the intention of protecting the participants’ privacy.

  • You can expect some documents and other resources to be sent to you via email over the duration of the course. However, these are minimal and you should not expect to receive lots of different material.

To ensure you receive all of the information, we ask that you mark London Sleep Coach as a trusted source in your email. If for any reason you have not received an email, please ensure you check your spam before contacting me.

    • A working computer/laptop with a secure internet connection and working webcam and microphone. I ask that you do not use a phone or tablet for the zoom, as you need to be sitting and have your hands freely available.

    • A quiet room where you will not be disturbed.

    • A pen and paper for both taking a few notes and for some of the exercises completed during the course.

  • If a cancellation is requested at least 3 days before the first session of a course, the full fee will be refunded. Alternatively, the full fee can be applied as a credit towards attending a future course, which must be booked in advance and is subject to availability. Unfortunately, I am unable to offer any refunds or course transfers less than 3 days prior to the first session or after the course has begun.

Please see our full terms and conditions of bookings for more information.
